Web Map Service (WMS)

The Standard Web Map Service (WMS) provides a simple HTTP interface to request map images from one or more distributed servers on the Internet. A WMS request defines which geographic layers and area of interest to process. The response to the request is one or more map images (in JPEG, PNG, ... format) that can be displayed on an Internet browser. The Standard also supports the ability to specify whether the returned image should be transparent, so that you can combine layers from different servers.

Web Feature Service (WFS)

The Standard Web Feature Service (WFS), similarly to the WMS, provides a simple HTTP interface to directly request geographic objects (and not map images) from one or more distributed servers over the Internet. The demand and response mechanisms are similar to WMS, with the difference that no images are returned, but the descriptions of the individual spatial objects contained within the area of interest to be processed (spatial coordinates and any alphanumeric attributes).

Web Coverage Service (WCS)

An Download or Download Service "allows you to download copies of territorial data or part of them and, where feasible, access them directly" (Directive 2007/2 / EC). There are several territorial data that, in accordance with the INSPIRE Directive, must be made available in the form of coverage. In this perspective, the current INSPIRE guidelines for the implementation of Download Services (downloads) are being updated to implement the Web Coverage Service (WCS).
