Strong earthquake in central Croatia

Croatia was recently affected by a seismic sequence that culminated with a 6.4 magnitude event on 29 December 2020, its epicenter was in Petrinja, about 60 km south of Zagreb. ISPRA researchers, together with  colleagues from the CNR and from the University of Camerino, are in the epicentral area of the earthquake to map the environmental effects induced by the earthquake, with particular reference to the primary effects of surface faulting, and the secondary effects, such as landslides, liquefaction and sinkholes.

The Petrinja earthquake is particular interesting, both for the importance that the Croatian structures have with regard to the seismic hazard in the Adriatic area and for the importance that they have as sources of tsunami, both for the geodynamic context and the transcurrent kinematics of the event, that are similar to the conditions that characterize the Friuli area.
